Marij Swinkels and Jorrit Steehouder on Dutch European economic policy

In a joint effort between two disciplines (Humanities and Governance) Marij Swinkels and Jorrit Steehouder published and article on Dutch economic policy narratives at home and in Europe. Ever since the last economic crisis (2008), Dutch leaders have moralized European economic policy through narratives of good and bad economic behavior. This now impedes their leeway to deviate from austerity policies, as they fear the populist backlash from their decisions. The political risk of moralizing European economic policy, in this sense, it that European leaders failto present the European project as the story of shared norms, values and interests it has historically been.
