Was an American labor union leader, who served as the secretary-treasury of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). During Roosevelt’s New Deal policies Carey emerged as a central figure in the American labor union movement. He was a supporter of free trade and democratic unionism. In 1947, he served on the President’s Committee on Foreign Aid directed by Averell Harriman.
