Served as a Republican member of the Senate for Wisconsin from 1925 to 1947, championed organized labor and supported most of Roosevelt’s New Deal legislation. He failed to get reelected for the Senate in 1946 as he was defeated by Joseph McCarthy. He continued to serve Truman as a foreign aid adviser, and was a sharp critic of communist Russia. Within the President’s Committee on Foreign Aid LaFollette headed chaired the Development, Administration and Drafting Subcommittees. During the legislative process of the European Recovery Program (ERP), he made several testimonies in support of European economic reconstruction.
