Reynaud was the French Prime Minister when Germany defeated France in May and June 1940. Refusing an armistice with Germany, he resigned on 16 June. Arrested by Philippe Petain’s administration, and remained imprisoned in Germany and Austria during the war.
He favored a United States of Europe.
From 1949 until 1959 Paul Reynaud was a member of the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe. In August 1950, he introduced a resolution at the Consultative Assembly calling for an “organization of European defence.”
