Pietro Campili was born in Frascati, Italy, and graduated in Accounting, Economics and Commerce. He was a well-known Italian politician and served in a wide range of ministerial and governmental positions.
After Campili’s studies, he became a banker and bank administrator, but he retired from public life after the fascist seizure of power. From 1943 onwards, Campili participated in the process of the formation of the Christian Democratic Party (La Democrazia Cristiana). He was also a member of the Italian National Liberation Committee, which was made up of a wide array of political and military organizations that opposed fascism and the Nazi occupation of Italy.
In July 1946 Campili entered the second Ministry of Alcide de Gasperi – whose pro-European outlooks he shared – as Minister of Foreign Trade, and subsequently as Minister of Finance and Treasury. In this position, he negotiated a 100-million-dollar loan from the USA and represented Italy in the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC).
